The construction of this synagogue lasted from 1799 through 1854. The stone edifice was erected on the site of the wooden synagogue burned during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1772. By 1877 it was Chernivtsi’s main synagogue. The first rabbi was Dr. Lazar Elias Igel (1854-1892). With short interruptions owing to the First and Second World Wars, the synagogue functioned until the late 1950’s. From autumn 1941 through winter 1942, the synagogue with the premises was part of the Jewish ghetto. By the decision of the executive committee of Chernivtsi’s Regional Council of People’s Deputies №190/10 of 9 April 1959 the edifice was appropriated by the City Council for further use as a cinema. From that time, the synagogue building has been used for non-religious purposes.
