Virtual Hrushevskyi Villa: An AR App for the Museum

About the project

The “DMH Lviv AR” project focuses on creating a highly accurate 3D model of the building of the Mykhailo Hrushevskyi State Memorial Museum in Lviv using photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies, as well as digitizing key museum exhibits. The museum is located in an authentic memorial villa from the early 20th century, where the family of the prominent Ukrainian historian and statesman Mykhailo Hrushevskyi lived for over 12 years.

The project emerged from the need to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of the museum, as well as to promote the history of Ukraine and authentic artifacts related to the era of the Ukrainian Revolution and Mykhailo Hrushevskyi. The implementation of innovative technologies ensures the preservation of the architectural monument and museum objects in digital format, facilitates restoration processes, and opens up new opportunities for their presentation to a wide audience.

Project Objectives

  • Perform laser and photogrammetry scanning of the museum building to create its highly accurate 3D model.
  • Digitize and create interactive 3D models of 23 unique museum exhibits.
  • Develop a mobile application with AR technology for a virtual tour of the museum and interactive viewing of the exhibits.
  • Create souvenir postcards with AR that allow virtual interaction with the museum exhibits.
  • Raise public awareness about the importance of modern digital technologies in the field of cultural heritage preservation.

Implementation

The project was implemented by our team in 2019 with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. At the first stage, laser and photogrammetry scanning of the museum building and exhibits was carried out using professional cameras, DJI drones, and a Leica BLK360 laser scanner. In the final stage, the interactive AR application “DMH Lviv AR” was developed for Android and iOS platforms, along with AR-enabled souvenir postcards that allow users to take a virtual tour of the museum and explore the exhibits in detail.

Thanks to the “DMH Lviv AR” project, the museum received a modern tool for promoting its heritage, allowing visitors from anywhere in the world to virtually interact with the landmark and its exhibits. The project became an important example of the successful digital transformation of cultural sites in Ukraine, encouraging similar initiatives in other museums.
