The #SaveUkrainianHeritage project was initiated by the Skeiron team with the goal of preserving Ukraine’s cultural heritage through digitization. The initiative involves creating accurate three-dimensional (3D) models of architectural and cultural landmarks that are at risk of destruction or damage.
In the context of the full-scale invasion and ongoing damage to historical and cultural sites, the relevance of digitally preserving cultural heritage is increasing. According to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, more than half a thousand cultural heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed since the beginning of the full-scale war. The #SaveUkrainianHeritage project aims to minimize the consequences of such losses.
Project Goal
The main goal of the project is to create detailed digital models of architectural and cultural landmarks in order to:
- Document the current condition of the objects.
- Support future restoration and reconstruction in case of damage.
- Preserve historical memory for future generations.
- Promote cultural heritage among a wide audience.
Implementation and Scale
The project covers a significant part of Ukraine, with a focus on UNESCO sites and landmarks of national importance. Over 100 digital models of architectural monuments have already been created in Lviv, Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Zhovkva, Kamianets-Podilskyi, and other cities. One of the largest-scale projects was the architectural complex of the Residence of Bukovynian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, where over 3,000 scanning stations were conducted.
The team collaborates with heritage protection institutions, local governments, and international organizations, including the ALIPH Foundation, POLONIKA, and IKGS München. With their support, regular scanning of new sites is being carried out.
Future Use of Digital Models
The digitized models serve as a foundation for restoration, reconstruction, and academic research projects. In the future, a specialized platform is planned to be developed, providing access to professionals, researchers, and restoration experts.
Project Participation and Support
Professional surveyors, volunteers, and international partners are actively involved in the project. At the same time, there is an opportunity to support the initiative through financial contributions, informational support, and active participation in the project.
