The “Pocket City – Lviv” project is aimed at digitizing prominent architectural landmarks of Lviv using photogrammetry and augmented reality (AR) technologies, as well as promoting them to a wide audience through AR technology.
The project emerged from the need to preserve architectural heritage in digital format, which is especially important due to the risks of loss or destruction of historical buildings. Digital models make it possible to capture the current state of architectural objects and simplify the processes of restoration, reconstruction, and research. At the same time, the use of modern technologies allows cultural heritage to be presented in an accessible way to the general public.
Project Goal
The main goal of the project is to create accurate digital 3D models of significant architectural landmarks in Lviv for their preservation, as well as to present these models to a wide audience to promote cultural heritage.
Objectives
- Perform precise scanning and create digital 3D models of Lviv’s architectural landmarks.
- Develop a souvenir product that will promote Lviv’s cultural heritage.
- Present the created models to a wide audience through an interactive exhibition using AR technology.
- Raise public awareness of the importance of digital technologies in the preservation of cultural heritage.
- Encourage the implementation of similar projects in other cities of Ukraine.
Implementation
The project was implemented in 2019 by our team in collaboration with Gwara Media.
The partnership with Gwara Media emerged after the teams met in Kharkiv, where we jointly refined the concept of “Pocket City.”
The initial stage included scanning architectural landmarks using photogrammetry. The final stage featured an AR exhibition at the Sheptytsky Center of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), the development of the mobile application “Lviv. Pocket City,” and the production of souvenir postcards. The idea to present digitized objects through AR arose at a time when the technology was rapidly gaining momentum, and we decided to harness its new capabilities in our project. The project was implemented using the team’s own resources.
